Masking and Prepping

Masking and Prep Example 1

Here we walk you through the masking and prep on a Ford Mustang. Notice how we mask the large areas with Tape and Drape, the smaller areas with Blue Tape and use the Yellow Tape to create sharp lines. Always pay close attention to "peel when wet" areas.

Masking and Prep Example 2

Here we walk you through the masking and prep on another vehicle. Same routine - notice how we mask the large areas with Tape and Drape, the smaller areas with Blue Tape and use the Yellow Tape to create sharp lines. Always pay close attention to "peel when wet" areas.

What about tight trim and rubber seals?

Trim Tape is a helpful tool when masking a car. You have to know how to use it, but once you get the hang of it, it really helps you tackle some challenging areas. Depending on what kind of seals or trim your vehicle has, Trim Tape may really come in handy.

What kind of materials do we use for masking?

Blue Painters Tape
This is the real workhorse when masking cars. Use it to seal down Tape and Drape, cover smaller surface areas, and much more. Always have a roll or two of Blue Painters Tape on hand when masking a car. Every DYC Car Kit comes with Blue Painters Tape included.
Yellow masking tape
This is a narrower tape, however has a stronger adhesive than the Blue Painters Tape. It grips the surface much better, it's got more flexibility for going around edges, and it's more chemical resistant. Use the Yellow Masking Tape anywhere you want tight, clean lines like around window trim and the edges of headlights.
Tape and Drape
Tape and Drape is a huge time saver. Cover large surface areas like the windshield, roof, or more with this item. It's essentially a large sheet of masking plastic lined with adhesive tape on one side. This product comes in handy and should be utilized on every full vehicle masking job.
Trim tape
Trim Tape takes some time to get comfortable with, but once you learn how to use it, it becomes a critical part of the masking process. Not every vehicle will require the use of Trim Tape, but depending on the style of trim or seals you have, it can make a huge difference.
