Do I need a Basecoat?

Basecoats: These do not require a basecoat, but we highly recommend using a primer first for best adhesion and finish quality. You can view our recommended Primers here.

Midcoats: These do require a basecoat. For the best color accuracy and performance, we recommend one of our Luna Basecoats — available here.

Do I need a Clearcoat?

Yes! All of our Luna Permanent Paint products require a TopCoat. We recommend the VHS Crystal Premium Clearcoat or the Standard Gloss Clearcoat.

Application Guide (4 OZ, Quarts and Gallons)

Preparation

  • Surface Prep: Clean thoroughly to remove dust, grease and old coatings. Lightly scuff or sand smooth surfaces (P400–P600 grit) to promote adhesion. Wipe with a breathable tack cloth or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Primer: If you have exposed metal or need to repair large areas we would suggest using our UHS Primer (Panels should be sanded no higher than P400 grit).
  • Environment: Ideal temperature 65–75 °F (18–24 °C). Relative humidity 40–60 %. Spray in a well-ventilated area or booth to avoid overspray buildup.
  • Personal Protection: Wear a properly fitting respirator rated for solvent vapors. Use nitrile gloves and safety goggles. Keep working area free of open flames or sparks.

Mix Well

  • Mix the Paint well as pigments may have settled during transport.
  • Test-spray on a disposable card or scrap piece to check atomization, color and coverage before applying.

Spraying Technique

  • Spray 2 x 75% Wet coats for full coverage with a 10-15 minute flash between coats.
  • Midcoats, Pearls & Metallics will all need a ‘3rd Coat’ which should be ‘Control or Effect coat’. If you are unsure, please ask for the Luna Technical Department when contacting customer service. When spraying these types of paints, take your time and apply even coats.
  • Use smooth, even passes, overlapping each pass by 50 % for uniform coverage.

Drying before Clearcoat

  • Flash Between Coats: Allow each coat to fully flash (no longer tacky) before recoating to prevent runs and orange peel.
  • After the final coat of color, wait 30 minutes before applying our VHS or Standard Clearcoat
Application Guide (Aerosols)

Preparation

  • Surface Prep: Clean thoroughly to remove dust, grease and old coatings. Lightly scuff or sand smooth surfaces (P400–P600 grit) to promote adhesion. Wipe with a breathable tack cloth or isopropyl alcohol.
  • If you are painting on uneven painted surfaces or bare metal you should consider one of our Primer Aerosols

Shake & Test

  • Shake the can vigorously for 45–60 seconds, inverting several times to mix pigments and metallic flakes.
  • Test-spray on a disposable card or scrap piece to check atomization, color and coverage before applying to the final part.

Spraying Technique

  • Hold the can 5–6 inches (12–15 cm) from the surface, perpendicular to the panel. Do not tilt.
  • Use smooth, even passes, overlapping each pass by 50 % for uniform coverage.
  • Depress the trigger fully for consistent flow; release fully between passes to avoid drips.
  • Move the can at a steady speed

Layering & Coverage

  • Solid colors: Apply two coats (~85 % coverage each), letting each flash for 2–3 minutes before the next.
  • Pearl / Metallic colors: Apply two coats as above but finish with a lighter 3rd coat double the distance from the item you are spraying to achieve the ‘Control or Effect coat.
  • Flash time 5–10 minutes.

Drying before Clearcoat

  • Flash Between Coats: Allow each coat to fully flash (no longer tacky) before recoating to prevent runs and orange peel.
  • After the final coat of color, wait 30 minutes before applying our 2K Clearcoat Aerosol.

Cleanup & Storage

  • Cap Clearing: turn the can upside down and spray until only propellant comes out - his keeps the valve and cap clean.
  • Nozzle Care: Remove and clean with solvent (do not soak)
  • Storage: Store cans upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid freezing or temperatures above 120 °F (49 °C).
