How to Apply Touch-Up Paint (Without Making It Worse)

4 min read

A stone chip is a $25 fix or a $500 fix. The difference is mostly whether you rush it.

We mix touch-up paint to factory codes all day, every day — 188,000+ colors at last count — so we've heard every version of "I made it worse." This is the process that avoids that.

First: is this actually a touch-up job?

Touch-up paint is for chips and small scratches that are deeper than the clearcoat — you can feel them with a fingernail, and you can see a different color (primer gray, or metal) at the bottom.

  • Can't feel it with a fingernail? That's a clearcoat scuff. You don't need paint — you need polish. Paint on top of a scuff is how you make things worse.
  • Shiny metal at the bottom, bigger than a pencil eraser? Do the touch-up soon. Bare metal rusts, and rust spreads under paint.
  • Longer than your hand, or through to metal along the whole length? That's aerosol-or-body-shop territory. A brush can't make that invisible, and we'd rather tell you now.

What you need

  • Touch-up paint mixed to your exact paint code — not "close enough" off a shelf. Your code is on a sticker in the driver's door jamb on most cars. Look it up here and we'll mix it fresh.
  • Isopropyl alcohol and a clean microfiber cloth
  • A toothpick or fine brush (our 2oz bottles have the brush built into the cap)
  • Ten minutes of patience per layer — this is the one people skip

The process

  1. Wash the panel, then degrease the chip. Wipe the chip and the inch around it with isopropyl on a microfiber. Any wax or road film left in the chip stops paint sticking. This step is 30 seconds and skipping it causes half of all failures.
  2. If there's rust, deal with it first. Scrape the loose rust out with the tip of a toothpick or fine sandpaper. Paint over rust and the rust keeps going underneath — you'll be back in six months.
  3. Less paint than you think. Dab — don't brush — a thin layer into the chip. You're filling a hole, not painting a wall. The paint should sit below the surrounding surface after layer one.
  4. Wait. Then do it again. Give each layer 10–15 minutes. Two or three thin layers beat one thick blob every single time. A blob shrinks as it cures and leaves a crater with a ring around it — the classic bad touch-up look.
  5. Stop when it's level. Build the paint until it sits just proud of the surface, then leave it alone. Full cure takes 24–48 hours depending on temperature.
  6. Optional: polish. After a few days, a light polish blends the edges. If you used our 1K gloss touch-up, the gloss is already in the formula — no clearcoat step. Polish directly and you're done.

The three mistakes that make it worse

  1. One thick coat. It shrinks, wrinkles, or runs. Thin layers, always.
  2. Wrong color. "Black" is not a color — BMW alone has dozens of blacks. If the paint isn't mixed to your code, it will show in sunlight, guaranteed.
  3. Painting in the cold. Below about 50°F / 10°C, paint dries slowly, sags and traps moisture. Do it in the garage or wait for a warmer day.

Quick answers

How long does touch-up paint take to dry? Touch-dry in 15–30 minutes, safe to drive in an hour, fully cured in 24–48 hours.

Do I need clearcoat on top? With traditional basecoat touch-up, yes. With our 1K gloss formula, no — the gloss is built in, which removes the step most DIY jobs get wrong.

Will it be invisible? Honest answer: from a few feet away, yes. Nose-against-the-panel, a filled chip is a filled chip. Invisible-at-any-distance requires spraying and blending — which is a bigger job, and for one chip, rarely worth it.
